What’s new at Hue Heritage Site this Tet? THE TET POLE ERECTING AND THE “ANCIENT FRAGRANCE OF LUNAR TET’S CAKE”
The Tet pole erecting is a traditional rite of the nation. Especially, it used to an important rite in the new year under the Nguyen dynasty. Besides the spiritual viewpoint of the folk, the Tet pole erecting of Nguyen dynasty was to inform the new year coming. In present Hue, the Tet pole erecting has been organized in Lunar December 23 at The Mieu Temple from 9.00 AM and Long Palace from 10.00 AM by Hue Monuments Conservation Centre. The rite was rehabilitated by the Centre in 2013, and has gradually been an indispensable tradition at Hue Heritage Site in welcoming Vietnamese traditional New Year. Especially, this year, after the Tet pole erecting at Long An Palace, within the area of Te Tuu House, Hue Monuments Conservation Centre will carry out the program “Ancient fragrance of Tet’s cake” in launching the new year with traditional colors.

The “Ancient fragrance of Tet’s cake” includes songs of Hue Chamber Music, royal and folk games, calligraphy performance with which participants will be gifted with script, especially the the banh chung[1] and banh tet packing competition, so on reminding of the national traditional new year.  In Vietnamese ancient history, the 6th King Hung Vuong wanted to find the successor; hence he pledged to transfer the throne to the one who can bring him tasty dishes showing the piety to the royal ancestors. Prince Lang Lieu offered the banh chung and banh day[2] that were made of sticky rice representing the round heaven and square earth. Since then, the banh chung appeared in Vietnamese history with a special national imprint. When the new year comes, the ancestor offering tray of Vietnamese people must have the banh chung and banh tet.

In the springtime atmosphere with traditional costumes, verses and flowers, tourists may have chances to enjoy the Hue ancient inspirations.

Activities during Tet holiday

SPRING WELCOMING AT THE IMPERIAL PALACE

On the Lunar New Year, according to the governmental regulations, from the first to the third day of the Lunar New Year (16/Feb - 18/Feb/2018), it will be free of charge to the Vietnamese tourists in visiting Hue Heritage Site. On this occasion, Hue Monuments Conservation Centre will organize many activities in the Imperial Palace (Dai Noi) to serve the public with many activities, specifically as follows:

- Feb. 16. 2018 (The first new year day):

+ Morning: The Change of Guard at Ngo Mon Gate (9.00 AM); the Unicorn and Dragon Dance in front of Thai Hoa Hall (9.30 AM), the Royal Games and Calligraphy performance at back of Thai Hoa Hall (10.00AM), The Great Music performance at The Mieu Temple (10.30 AM)

+ Afternoon: The music program “Royal inspiration” at the yard of Thai Hoa Hall (3.30 PM - 4.15 PM).

- Feb 17.2018 (The second new year day):

+ Morning: The Change of Guard at Ngo Mon Gate (9.00 AM); The music program “Royal inspiration” at the yard of Thai Hoa Hall (9.30 AM to 10.15 AM)

+ Afternoon: Performance of traditional martial arts at the yard of Thai Hoa Hall (2.30 PM); the Unicorn and Dragon Dance  at the yard of Can Chanh Hall (3.00 PM)

- Feb.18.2018 (The third new year day):

+ Morning: The Change of Guard at Ngo Mon Gate (9.00 AM, the Small Music performance in front of Thai Hoa Hall (9.30 AM);  the Unicorn and Dragon Dance  at the yard of Can Chanh Hall (10.00 AM), the Great Music performance at The Mieu Temple (10.30 AM).

+ Afternoon:  : Performance of traditional martial arts at the yard of Thai Hoa Hall (2.00 PM), he Small Music performance in front of Thai Hoa Hall (2.30 PM), the Great Music performance at The Mieu Temple (4.00 PM).

 - Feb. 22. 2018 (the 7th new year day):

The Tet pole moving-down at Tha Mieu Temple (9.00 AM) and at Long An Palace (10.00)

 


[1] Banh chung and banh tet are two kinds of Vietnamese traditional steamed cakes made of sticky rice and pig’s fat and mung bean together with different kinds of spices.

[2] Banh day is similar to the banh chung and banh tet, but different in forms.
